Nigeria: Minister Sunday Dare Pledges To Take Action Over NPFL Tragedy

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development in Nigeria, Mr Sunday Dare, expressed deep griefs at the incident that led to the demise of a local league player on Sunday, Diamond Hub 101 reports.

The fixture of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) pitting Nasarawa United FC against Kaduna United was grim due to the sudden slumping of the Solid Miners’ defender, Chineme Martins.

All actions to resuscitate him by the Nasarawa United FC medical team proved abortive. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. Martins played for only 47 minutes before he slumped.

Some images taken during the time of the incident revealed that the defender was mobbed after he collapsed and this might have caused a blockage of fresh air. There was no ambulance to transport him under controlled conditions.

The Minister, who expressed his deep regrets at the ‘avoidable’ incident, also sent his consolations to the family of the deceased and promised to work towards avoiding a repeat of such unwarranted tragedy.

Mr. Dare has proposed a collaboration with the management of the NPFL to make sure that the right facilities are put in place ahead of any match.

The death of Nasarawa United FC defender, Chineme Martins, who slumped during an NPFL Match is sad but regrettably avoidable. While registering my condolences with team/ family, the Ministry will immediately work with NPFL to rule out mandatory conditions before any match is played.
